Here are some of our suggestions for great recreational opportunities in the Forest Preserves of Cook County.
Hiking
Here are a few of our favorite hikes.
Biking
More than 100 miles of paved, multi-use trails accommodate cycling, walking and in-line skating.
Friends’ Tip: Mountain bike trails are available at Deer Grove near Palatine and in the Palos Preserves.
Fishing
More than 40 Forest Preserve District lakes are managed for recreational sport fishing. Check out the District’s comprehensive fishing guide.
Individual lake maps are available as well.
Golf
Take your pick of ten courses, four driving ranges, or a miniature golf course, which are now maintained and run by Billy Casper Golf.
Cross Country Skiing
Skiing is permitted on all official forest preserve trails. You can rent skis, poles and boots from Camp Sagawau Nature Center near Lemont from late December through early March. Lessons and ski tours are also available. You can also contact Camp Sagawau, 12545 W. 111th Street, Lemont, IL 60439; Phone: 630-257-2045.
Sledding
The Forest Preserve District maintains some great sledding hills.
Boating
Boat rentals are available at Busse Lake near Schaumburg, Maple Lake near Willow Springs and Tampier Lake near Orland Park.
Paddling
Openlands has water trail maps posted here.
Horseback Riding
You don’t need to own a horse! Guided tours can be arranged from one of eight stables that offer livery service.
