Bunker Hill North Flatwoods Volunteer Workday

Posted: October 2nd, 2020

10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Meeting Location: 6639 West Harts Road, Niles, IL 60714 (Follow the yellow “volunteer” signs to the exact spot)

Help us cut down the invasive shrubs and trees that are crowding out the native wildflowers, grasses, and young oaks in this unique woodland. A combination of poorly draining soils, seasonally wet conditions, and historic wildfires at this site have created a habitat where a number of rare plant species survive, including numerous tall and straight Pin Oaks that give this area the feel of a woodland cathedral. We’ll cut unwanted brush using hand tools and dispose of it in a brush pile fire. All necessary tools and training will be provided. Face coverings are required. Please bring your own water and snacks, as well as work gloves if you have them. Registration is required.

To help you prepare for a productive day:

  • Bring water and a snack.
  • Bring work gloves, if you have some. You will be provided some of you don’t.
  • Dress according to the weather. Closed toe, water proof shoes are a must.
  • Apply insect repellent. We often have some on hand if you forget.
  • Wear your MASK – you will not be able to participate if you don’t have a mask.

Blue Star Woods Volunteer Workday

Posted: September 21st, 2020

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Meeting Location: North end of the parking lot off of Lake Ave. Look for yellow “Volunteer’ signs

Help us restore health to this oak woodland and savanna. Much of Blue Star Woods was cut down and became part of Camp Skokie Valley, a CCC and then POW camp, in the 1930’s. Since then, invasive shrubs and trees have taken over and excluded the diverse wildlife communities that once lived here. But in the last 5 years, volunteers have been working to make these woods into good habitat for plants and animals once again. We’ll cut unwanted brush using hand tools and dispose of it in a brush pile fire. All necessary tools and training will be provided. Face coverings are required. Please bring your own water and snacks, as well as work gloves if you have them. Registration required.
